Notary Public Service Policy

The Dixon Homestead Library offers Notary Public service to its patrons.  Since a Notary is not available during all Library hours, and will not be available in the twenty (20) minutes prior to closing; it is strongly recommended that an appointment be made by telephone (201-384-2030).

  • The person whose signature is being notarized must present identification.   A valid photo ID with a signature must be presented:  a current driver’s license, county ID, or passport is recommended.
  • DO NOT SIGN the document before coming to the Library. In-person signing of the document must take place in the presence of the Notary.
  • Documents must be clearly understood by the Notary. Documents in any language other than English will not be notarized at the Library.  The Notary and the person seeking notarization must be able to communicate directly with each other:  a translator cannot be used in the transaction between the patron and the Notary.
  • If a witness is required, please bring a witness with you—Library staff, patrons or the Notary cannot act as a witness. In order to serve as a witness, the witness must personally know the person whose document is being notarized and present a valid photo ID.
  • The Library provides only basic notary services. Notary service is not available for mortgage or real estate documents, deeds, wills, living wills, living trusts, codicils, I-9’s or depositions.
  • Certain public documents cannot be copied and notarized. Examples of these are birth certificates, death certificates and marriage certificates.
  • Notary Service is limited to three documents per person, per visit.  Blank forms are not acceptable and will not be notarized.
  • Notaries cannot provide legal advice or counseling regarding documents.
  • In accordance with New Jersey Notarial Law, the Library Notary reserves the right to decline service if the document(s), identification or circumstances of the request raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity or doubt for the Library.  A Notary Journal of all notarial acts performed in this Library will be maintained as a public record.
  • As recommended by the State of New Jersey, Department of the Treasury, the charge for Notary Service is $2.50 per page.  Fees are retained by the Library.
